The Spike Award is awarded to one New World School of the Arts College student currently enrolled in the Dance program. Auditions are held yearly in the fall. Exact time and location TBD
OBJECTIVE:
We are looking for someone who is confident, mature and technically strong enough to withstand the rigorous demands of ADF and for whom this summer festival could provide a potentially life changing experience.
Here are a few tips to ensure the best possible audition for both you and the panel.
SPIKE AUDITION TIPS:
• Do Your Research:
Check out americandancefestival.org
We are most often attracted to the candidates who are very articulate about why this program specifically is significant to them and how it suits their artistic goals.
• Prepare a kick-ass Solo (1 min maximum)
Your solo should show off what you do well as well as show your maturity as a performer. This doesn’t mean throw every trick you can do into the solo. We simply want to get to know you. You do not have to choreograph your own solo although it is encouraged. Your solo can be a combination, phrase from another piece, etc, whatever feels like it best represents you. If improvisation is your strongest suit make sure you also show your range, movement wise and performance wise, within the improvisational structure. If possible, perform your solo for a faculty member and/or fellow student who can give you feedback before the audition.
• Best Application Ever!
Print and fill out the official Spike audition application before the audition day so that you can take your time in filling it out. The application is the panel’s opportunity to get to know you in a different way. Your thoughtfulness, honesty and wit can really make the difference between getting the scholarship or not. Your ability to articulate your thoughts and goals shows us your maturity and is a glimpse into your complexity.
